There are several opportunities at Walnut Creek UMC for study and learning. In addition to weekly studies, we also do studies based on a book or designed around the pastor’s sermon series. There are also several special seasonal studies throughout the year, including the season of Lent and the season of Advent.
For more information on all of our studies and/or to register, please contact the front office. You can email [email protected] and ask to be put onto the list for any of these classes and/or to receive the ZOOM links.
Spiritual Formation Lenten Series
Starting Feb. 25th 2024, There is a drop-in opportunity 11:30AM on Sundays with a Hybrid format (the Chapel and online) during the season of Lent to ponder Climate Change. There is an online only option at 1PM online for the Adult Sunday School Class . We will use the book, “A Hopeful Earth” by Sally Dyck and Sarah Ehrman. The book will be supplemented with more current data and other personal insights by our leader for this series, Rev. Pam Abby. Do not worry if you have not read the book! There will be plenty to learn and discuss on the fly!
Note: The UWF (United Women in Faith) Book Group, which meets Tuesdays at 4:00 via Zoom, will not meet on December 26.
On January 2, this group will resume meeting with a new book, Our Strangely Warmed Hearts by Bishop Karen Oliveto.
Karen Oliveto is bishop of the Mountain Sky
Episcopal Area for The United Methodist Church and the first openly lesbian bishop in the denomination. Here, Oliveto discloses how, just like Methodism founder John Wesley experienced a strangely warmed heart when he discovered his true spiritual identity, so too do spiritual renewal and a personal call to ministry emerge in the strangely warmed hearts of lesbian and gay Christians. The book includes first-person narratives of LGBTQ persons faithfully serving in the UMC, as well as how the coming-out process is deeply spiritual as one grows into an authentic, God-created and graced self.
If you have any questions, or would like to join the group, contact [email protected] to be connected with Johanna Meyer-Mitchell.
