FAQ for First Time Visitors

"It was honestly intimidating to come to church for the first time. What am I going to find? Where am I going to do? What are they going to think about me? All those thoughts raced through my brain. But the minute the door was opened by a long-haired guy with rainbow suspenders I knew there was a place for me here." - first time visitor

We understand you have questions. Maybe you've never been to church before. Maybe it's been a long time. Or maybe you've been a lifetime member. Here you will find answers to some of the most common questions we receive.

Who worships at WCUMC?

Our congregation is a motley crew that forms a progressive community of faith. We come from all over Contra Costa county but predominantly here in Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Concord, and Martinez. Our commonality is that we found a welcoming community that opens the doors to exactly who we are.

What should I expect when I visit?

Once you turn from Main St. you will see our church building with beautiful faceted glass windows and a sizable parking lot. Walking into the courtyard, you will be met at the door by our greeters with a hearty hello and welcomed by our ushers with a program of our services today. You may choose to sit anywhere you like, either in the main seating area or if you would like to sit in our balcony let the usher know and they can show you the way.

Our organist will begin the service with a Prelude and the choir enters along with Pastor Eileen. During the service you will have the opportunity to pray with our blessing team at the altar for both your joys and concerns, hear a rousing and inspriational choir, or depending on the Sunday we may have a special offering, visit, musical performance, video, or any number of happenings. No two services are ever identical!

After service you will be welcomed to join us in the Social Hall for coffee, baked goods, and conversation. We also understand that some prefer the quiet reflection after a service. Regardless we welcome you to come back again.

What do I wear?

Come as you feel most comfortable. You will see people wearing everything from Hawaiian shirts, jeans, and flip flops to suits and ties, dresses, and even the occasional hat.

Where do I park?

We have paved parking spaces to the front side of the sanctuary and up the driveway behind the Education building. You may also park in the unpaved parking lot right besides our main lot. We do offer Handicap as well as Special Needs parking. On Sundays, we have permission to park in Wendy's lot off N. Main St. A stairway connects the back of their lot to our lot.

What will my children do?

When you come to church for the first time the usher would be happy to show you the nursery for babies and toddlers. Or you may choose to have your children join you in the sanctuary. There is a children's time in the worship hour about 15 minutes into the service, after which children may go to their Sunday School Classes. At the 10:45am, parents can pick up their children from the nursery and Children's Chapel.
